Jagannath Temple Beshas - Naba Jaubana Besha - Lord Jagannath Ritual

Naba Jaubana Besha

Nabajaubana Besha is a special ritual appearance of Jagannath at the Jagannath Temple Puri.
After the Anasara period (when the deities remain hidden due to ritual illness), Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra appear in a youthful form called Nabajaubana, meaning “new youth.” This darshan takes place just before the famous Rath Yatra. Devotees believe the deities regain fresh energy and beauty during this sacred appearance.

About Nabajaubana Besha (darshana):-

The two important rituals of Lord Jagannath after the Anasara period are Naba jaubana Darshan and Netrotsava. After Anasara, first Nabajaubana Darshan takes place and then Netrotsava is observed. Before the Nabajaubana Darshan, the Pata Deities (painted representations of the deities) that were worshipped at the Anasara Tati are immersed. The seven deities who were worshipped on a cot in front of the Tati are taken back to their respective places, and then the Tati (temporary barrier) is opened. The deities who were invoked in the Pata return again into the wooden idols. Devotees once again get the darshan of them in the form of Daru Brahma. This is called Nabajaubana Darshan. After this, the ritual of Netrotsava is performed. This Netrotsava has its own special procedures.
Before the Nabajaubana Darshan, during the Banakalagi ritual, the Srimukha-Singhari Dutta Mahapatra servitor draws the eyes of Lord Jagannath and the other deities. During this process, the pupil (Netra Pitula or Pua Dola) is also drawn, but it is not completed at that time. On the day of Netrotsava, after the Dutta Mahapatra servitor prepares black color in three silver vessels, the Puja Panda servitor completes the drawing of the pupils. This is done using three small sticks made from Tulsi wood.
These Tulsi sticks are brought from the Raghav Das Matha.
