Chacheri besha


Chacheri Besha is a special attire of Lord Jagannath observed at the Jagannath Temple. In this besha, the deities are decorated with simple clothes and flowers after the Ratha Yatra. It represents a relaxed and simple form of the Lord during the return journey. Devotees view this besha as a symbol of humility and simplicity.

When this besha observed ?

In the month of Phalguna, Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the form of Govinda. During this month, the Vasanta Rasa or Spring Festival is celebrated. In Odisha, this festival is popularly known as Dola Yatra.
On this occasion, the deities in the Jagannath Temple are adorned with the Chacheri Besha (special attire). In the temple, from Phagu Dashami to Chaturdashi, for five days, after the completion of the Madhyahna Dhupa (midday offering ritual) the deities in the Jagannath Temple are adorned with the Chacheri Besha (special attire) and offered Chacheri Bhoga (special food offering). The word “Chacheri” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Charchari.”

“Charchari” refers to the Holi festival, the songs sung during the spring season, musical performances, joy, amusement, and festive celebrations.
