When this Besha observed?

The Nabanka Besha is observed in the Jagannath Temple during the month of Pausha one day before Makara sankranti.

About Nabanka Besha :

The word “Nabanka” comes from the Odia words “Naba” (nine) and “Anka” (mark or stage). It symbolizes the nine stages of battle between Lord Krishna and Kansa. The ritual represents the gradual progress of the fight that finally ended with the defeat of the evil king.

According to Hindu mythology, Kansa, the cruel ruler of Mathura, imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after hearing a prophecy that Devaki’s eighth son would kill him. That eighth son was Lord Krishna.
Krishna was secretly taken to Gokul and raised there by Nanda and Yashoda. When Krishna grew up, he came to Mathura and challenged Kansa. After a fierce struggle in the wrestling arena, Krishna defeated and killed the tyrant king, freeing the people of Mathura from oppression.
The Nabanka Besha in the Jagannath Temple commemorates this great victory of righteousness over tyranny.
