Jagannath Temple Beshas - Lakshmi Narayana Besha - Lord Jagannath Ritual

Lakshmi Narayana Besha

In the Lakshmi–Narayana Besha, Lord Jagannath is dressed as Lord Narayana (Vishnu) and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped beside him. This besha represents the divine union of Lakshmi and Narayana, symbolizing prosperity and protection. The deities are decorated with beautiful ornaments, flowers, and special attire according to Vaishnava tradition.
Devotees worship the divine couple and pray for wealth, happiness, and well-being.

When this Besha observed?

On the Kartik Shukla Ekadashi of the month of Kartik, the Thia-kia (Lakshmi–Narayan) Besha of Jagannath is performed at the Jagannath Temple.
On this day, Lord Jagannath awakens from His divine sleep. According to tradition, the Lord goes to sleep from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi. His awakening on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi is known as Utthapana Ekadashi, which is popularly called Bada Ekadashi. From this day, the sacred period called Panchaka also begins. According to scriptures, since auspicious time starts from Bada Ekadashi, all kinds of mangalika (auspicious) ceremonies and rituals are resumed from this day. After four months of divine sleep, the Lord awakens and gives darshan to devotees along with Lakshmi. Therefore, on the Ratna Singhasana inside the temple, Jagannath appears in the Lakshmi–Narayan Besha for the devotees.
