About Abakash Besha :
It represents the daily morning routine of the Lord as a living divine king. The tradition of Abakash Besha comes from the ancient belief that Lord Jagannath is worshipped as a living divine king (Sakala Purusha). According to the temple traditions that developed under the rule of Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the daily worship of the Lord was organized like the daily routine of a human king, including waking up, bathing, eating, resting, and sleeping.
During Abakash, the deities symbolically perform morning hygiene activities. Temple servitors offer items such as:
Danta Kastha (twig used for brushing teeth)
Water for washing the mouth and bathing
Mirrors (Darpana)
Camphor and fragrant substances
These items are offered in front of the deities as symbolic acts because the wooden idols are not physically bathed every day.
The ritual reflects the philosophy that the Lord lives among his devotees like a human being. By performing daily activities such as brushing and bathing, the temple emphasizes the personal relationship between the deity and devotees.
