Chandanalagi Besha
The Chandanlagi Besha is a special decoration of Lord Jagannath observed in the Jagannath Temple during the summer season.
In this Besha, sandalwood paste (Chandan) is applied on the bodies of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra to keep the deities cool. The sandal paste is beautifully designed on the deities along with flowers and ornaments.
This ritual symbolizes devotion and also protects the deities from the heat of the summer.
When this Besha observed?
The Chandanlagi Besha of Lord Jagannath is particularly observed in the summer season, from the month of Vaishakha shukla akshya trutiya(18th day of vaishaka) to Jyestha shukla chaturdashi, at the Jagannath Temple.
About Chandanalagi Besha :
According to temple tradition, Lord Jagannath is worshipped as a living deity (Sakala Purusha) who experiences human-like needs such as food, rest, and comfort. During the hot summer months, the temperature in Puri becomes very high. To protect the deities from the heat and to keep them cool, temple servitors began applying sandalwood paste (Chandan) on the bodies of the deities.
In ancient Indian culture, sandalwood paste is known for its cooling and soothing properties. Kings and noble people in ancient times used sandalwood on their bodies to stay cool during summer. Since Lord Jagannath is worshipped as the King of the Universe, the same royal treatment is offered to him.
Gradually this practice became a sacred ritual known as Chandanlagi Besha. During this Besha, sandalwood paste is carefully applied on the faces and bodies of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra in artistic designs. The fragrance of sandalwood fills the temple, creating a peaceful and divine atmosphere.
