Panchamrut Lagi
Panchamrut (literally “five nectars”) is a sacred mixture used in Hindu rituals. It is primarily used for abhishekam (ritual bathing) of deities in Jagannath temple.
Ingredients (the “five nectars”)
- Milk – symbolizes purity
- Curd (yogurt) – represents prosperity
- Ghee (clarified butter) – stands for strength
- Honey – sweetness and unity
- Sugar or jaggery – symbolizes bliss and sweetness of life
Use of Panchamrut in Jagannath Temple
- Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of deities
- The idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are bathed with Panchamrut during special ceremonies.
- This is considered highly auspicious, purifying both the deities and the devotees spiritually.
- Distribution as Prasadam
- After the ritual bathing, small portions of Panchamrut may be offered to devotees as a sacred blessing.
- Preparation of Mahaprasad
- Panchamrut is sometimes mixed into certain offerings that eventually become part of the Mahaprasad distributed to devotees.
- Symbolizes purity, sweetness, and divine blessings.

- During major festivals like Rath Yatra, Snana Yatra, and Chandan Yatra, Panchamrut is extensively used in rituals.
