BRAHMA NAKHA TULASI

Brahma Nakha Tulasi in the tradition of Shree Jagannath Temple is considered a very sacred offering connected with the daily adornment of Lord Jagannath. It is associated especially with the Bada Singhar Besha, the final decoration of the day.

Daily Ritual:
During Bada Singhar Besha at night, the Puspalaka sevaks decorate the three deities with flowers, garlands and Tulasi. Among these offerings, a special preparation of Tulasi leaves mixed with camphor (karpura) is traditionally applied as Nakha Tulasi on the sacred body area of the deities.

The name "Nakha" refers to the traditional way this paste-like Tulasi preparation is applied. It is not an ordinary Tulasi; devotees consider it part of the intimate night service (seva) of Mahaprabhu. The fragrance of Tulasi and camphor is believed to be cooling and pure, suitable for the Lord’s night rest.
After the Bada Singhar Besha is completed, the Lord remains in that decoration until the next morning’s Mangal Alati. Seeing this form is regarded as very auspicious by devotees.
In devotional understanding, Tulasi is considered extremely dear to Lord Vishnu/Jagannath. Therefore, offering Tulasi during the Lord’s daily seva represents love, surrender, and devotion rather than just decoration.
